From a 1995 article in the Press-Republican Newspaper: "The first Essex Ferry Follies took place in the mid-60's, when a handful of winter-weary residents of Essex were out on the dock with whistles, bugles, and outlandish outfits to greet the first ferry of the season. The boatmen looked askance at the motley crew on the dock. They decided it must be some form of Vietnam protest. But once the source of the merriment was understood, Lake Champlain Transportation joined in the spirit, and has been a part of the gala ever since."
